Darker background colors in the YouTube app

YouTube recently updated its dark theme to be “even darker so the colors truly pop on your screen” on the web, mobile, and smart TVs. The change was made in response to user feedback, and it is intended to make the app more comfortable to use in low-light conditions.

The darker background colors are also said to help reduce eye strain, which can be a problem when using electronic devices in the dark. If you find that the new dark theme is too dark for your liking, you can always switch back to the light theme.

To turn on the dark theme in the YouTube app, follow these steps:

  • On the web: Go to youtube.com and click on your profile picture in the top right corner. Select Appearance: Device theme and then choose Dark theme.
  • On mobile: Open the YouTube app and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner. Select Settings > General > Appearance and then tap on Dark theme.
  • On smart TVs: Go to the YouTube app’s settings and select Appearance. Then, choose Dark theme.
